About

Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, MD, MS, FGCP, is a consultant Pediatrician and the substantive Director of Medical Affairs at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, in the northern Region of Ghana. He trained as an MD and pediatrician at Gazi and Hacettepe Universities in Ankara, Republic of Türkiye. He is also a fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.  His strong commitment to improving access to specialist child health services in northern Ghana led him to return to his home region after completing his training in Ankara. Since his return, he has led the establishment of a child health faculty and specialized services, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), pediatric specialist clinics, and a combined pediatric-adult sickle cell disease (SCD) clinic within the hospital. His work in the NICU and newborn health in the Northern Region of Ghana has contributed significantly to the reduction in institutional neonatal mortality. His efforts at capacity building have led to the accreditation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital for residency training in child health, a feat he hopes will further improve access to specialist child health services in the region. Dr. Abdul-Mumin is also an associate Professor of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine, University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. As an academic, he is passionate about using research to improve clinical outcomes. His research interest areas include neonatal medicine, childhood nutrition, SCD, and global health. In this regard, he has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented extensively in national and international meetings. He has also served as a mentor for numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has worked extensively with various academic institutions and global health partners in Ghana and across the globe. He is a St. Jude Global Scholar, and through this partnership, he is working on a project to improve early infant diagnosis for SCD and linkage to comprehensive care in Tamale, Ghana.
